Quebec’s December 1 Winter Tire Deadline: Getting Your GMC Sierra 1500 Ready in Time
October 28 2026,
Every fall, the same date comes around: December 1. From that day forward, your GMC Sierra 1500 needs to be on winter tires, and the rule stays in place until March 15.
Getting your truck ready is simple when you plan ahead. This guide covers what the rule requires, how to find the right tire size for your Sierra 1500 trim, and a few easy checks for your winter set.
What the Winter Tire Rule Requires
The province’s winter tire rule applies to all motor vehicles registered in Québec, including your Sierra 1500. Here are the key points, as set out by the Québec government:
- Winter tires are mandatory from December 1 to March 15
- Each winter tire must carry the winter tire pictogram on its sidewall or be studded
- The legal minimum tread depth is 1.6 mm, and at least 4.8 mm is recommended for winter
- Drivers who do not comply face a fine of $200 to $300
When you shop for a winter set, look for the pictogram on the sidewall. A tire marked for mud and snow use alone does not meet the requirement unless it also carries the winter pictogram.
Find the Right Tire Size for Your Sierra 1500

Your winter tires should match the size your truck was built for, unless your service advisor recommends an approved alternative. Here are the factory tire sizes for the 2026 GMC Sierra 1500 lineup.

Many Sierra owners choose a second set of wheels for their winter tires. Mounting winter tires on their own wheels makes each seasonal swap faster and simpler.
You can also confirm your exact size on the tire placard inside the driver’s door jamb, which lists the sizes your specific truck was configured with.
Book Your Tire Change Early
The weeks before December 1 are the busiest time of year for tire service. Booking your appointment early gives you more choice of dates and more time to source the exact winter tires you want for your trim.
If you are buying new winter tires this year, ordering ahead gives you the widest choice of tires in your trim’s size.
Use the Tire Fill Alert as Temperatures Drop
Every 2026 Sierra 1500 comes standard with a Tire Pressure Monitoring System with Tire Fill Alert. The system monitors the pressure in each tire and warns you when one runs low.
Tire Fill Alert is especially handy after a seasonal swap. While you add air, the truck gives you visual and audible alerts outside the vehicle once the tire reaches the recommended pressure, so you do not have to guess.
Cold weather lowers tire pressure, so it is worth checking your pressures again after the first deep freeze.
Check Your Tread Before You Mount
If you are reusing last season’s winter tires, check the tread depth before they go back on. The legal minimum is 1.6 mm, but at least 4.8 mm is recommended for winter driving.
A tire that is close to the legal minimum will not grip as well in snow and slush.
Our service team can measure your tread, inspect your tires for damage and let you know if it is time for a new set.
Plan Your Spring Switch Too

The winter tire requirement ends on March 15, but the Québec government recommends waiting a few weeks after that date before switching back to all-season or summer tires. Book your spring appointment with that timing in mind.
Your Sierra 1500 Winter Tire Checklist
- Book your tire change well before December 1
- Confirm your trim’s tire size on the door jamb placard
- Choose tires that carry the winter pictogram, or studded tires
- Check tread depth on reused tires, aiming for at least 4.8 mm
- Use Tire Fill Alert to set pressures after the swap
